Football Club of Canacona

When Chris Hindle first moved to Brighton from sunny Blackburn in 1994 he started playing football on Hove lawns.  This was a great way to meet new people and some of the friends Chris made down on Hove lawns playing football for the best part of ten years are still friends of his today.  One of those is a chap called Danny Hammer, or Dan Lawson to call him by his real name.  Dan and Chris used to play in the same District football team for a few years. Chris also helped Dan out with coaching at the Hove YMCA in 2003.  Dan continues to devote a huge amount of his spare time to worthwhile sports coaches.

Football Club of Canacona is one such cause that Dan has devoted a lot of time to over the last few years.  Here's the story.  In November 2005 while holidaying in Goa, Dan Lawson offered his services to the Goan Football Association. Coming from a background of football development in England, the GFA asked Dan to use his experience in the taluka of Canacona. The remitt was to build a youth football program in the area. The GFAs youth development programs in the rest of Goa had been very successful, however football in Canacona lagged behind its neighbours in the north of goa. The rural nature of the area and the pockets of poverty required a different strategy.

With the hard work of a great team of local coaches and administrators in two years the program developed 5 teams playing in the adult leagues as well as u16 and u14 competitions, and taluka teams  for u18,16,14 and 12. On the leaving the country in 2007 Dan Lawson vowed to Nazu Fernandes an outstanding coach who gave up a huge amount of his own time, and the countless young people who gained so much from the activities, that we would do his upmost to sustain the project with funding from Engalnd.

With this funding the project now pays Nazu a monthly salary to run and coach all the football sessions, as well as paying for equipment and travel expenses for all the teams.  To find out more about this project or to make a donation I would urge you to follow this link:
